M.Sc soil science colleges in Jaipur

The discipline of soil science, a branch of agricultural science, was introduced to study soil from various angles and examine its relationship with other elements, biotic or abiotic. Soil science is the branch of science that focuses on soil formation, classification and mapping; studies the fundamental soil properties (physical, chemical, biological and fertility) and its application to find the answers to the problems. M.Sc soil science colleges in Jaipur offer value-based education for aspirants.

Father of Soil Science

Vasily Vasilyevich Dokuchaev, the father of soil science, was the first scientist to consider soil a living entity possessing its origin and history of progress. He proposed that regional differences in soil type need to be explained by geological (parent material), climatic, biological, and topographic variables, and the amount of time allowed for pedogenesis to occur.

Using these concepts as a foundation, he developed the first genetic soil categorization. He established that living beings are an essential part of the soil and uncovered the fundamental rules governing the genesis and geographical dispersion of soils.

Branches of Soil Science

Because of such importance of soil, scientists have divided the study of soil science into various areas:

Pedology: This branch studies soil formation, evolution and its theories, often concerning the natural environment.

Edaphology: It focuses on the interaction of soil with living organisms, especially plants.

Soil physics: Soil physics deals with the physical properties of soil, its processes and phases as solid, liquid and gas.

Soil chemistry: It studies the chemical properties and composition of soil and the chemical processes occurring within it.

Soil biology: This branch studies the function of living creatures in the biological changes that occur in soil.

Soil mineralogy: It is the study of minerals within the soil and their contribution to genesis and other soil processes.

Soil fertility: Soil fertility refers to the condition of nutrients in the soil and the soil's capacity to deliver these nutrients to crops or plants for optimum development under optimal climatic circumstances such as temperature, light, etc.

Soil survey: The soil survey studies the systematic assessment and inspection of soil in laboratories and fields.

Soil technology: It is a practical side of soil science that deals with the principles and the properties of soil erosion and conservation.

M.Sc in Soil Science

M. Sc. in Soil Science is a two-year post-graduate degree that deals with soil's physical properties, biological content, and chemical composition. This course analyzes the Earth's outer shell. Throughout the program, students research and observe soil characteristics; use their discoveries to address various soil-management problems. They aim to restore depleted ecosystems by increasing soil fertility. Students work in agricultural production, environmental quality evaluation, and product toxicity.

Students holding an M. Sc. in Soil Science can either continue their academic life by enrolling in a PhD programme or earn. After completing the M. Sc program, post-graduates can become experts in land-productivity, waste management, agro-meteorology, soil rehabilitation and preservation, water management, and much more.

Graduates of the course work in the agriculture industry, forestry, environmental assessment, land use mining, oil and gas sectors and research for government or educational institutions. Positions like Crop Consultants, Wetland Specialists, County Conservationists, Crop Production Specialists, Watershed Technicians, Hydrologists, Environmental Technicians, and others are available to graduates of this course.
